The HSE’s Healthy Eating Active Living Programme has commissioned a short course, delivered by the National Institute for Prevention and Cardiovascular Health (NIPC). It is a free 3 month online training and education programme, designed to equip healthcare professionals with the core knowledge, skills and competences to deliver, understand and support patients to undertake physical activity.

The course involves 2 compulsory live sessions, 1.5 hours in duration. However, all other course content is self-paced and can be accessed over 3 months via an interactive online learning dashboard.

Topics include:

  • Fundamentals of Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour
  • The Current Landscape in Primary Care and Community Settings
  • Understanding Behaviour Change – The Essentials
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Measurement, Monitoring and Goal Setting to Promote Physical Activity

Applications are now open for course dates in Autumn/Winter 2026, with a deadline for applying by the 14th August, 2026.

Applications are welcome from healthcare practitioners working in primary care and community settings. It is a pre-course requisite for all course participants to complete the HSE Making Every Contact Count (MECC) e-Learning course before applying for this course.
