Adult Weight Management Programme

The Model of Care for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Ireland was launched in March 2021 and its implemention has seen the delivery of an Adult Weight Management Programme.

The aim of the programme is to provide support to people living with obesity to make healthier changes to weight related behaviours and achieve their ‘best weight’. This is the weight that can be maintained while living a healthy and happy life. A best weight may not be an “ideal” weight on the body mass index (BMI) scale. This sits within Level 2 of the Model of Care framework and provides specialist support to GPs in managing patients with obesity and weight related complications.

Programme Design:

This programme is designed as a behavioural intervention developed by the Obesity National Clinical Programme working with the Diabetes National Clinical Programme.

The delivery of the programme is done online and when fully implemented will be available in each of the 96 community health networks nationally.

The content covered in the programme includes:
  • Factors that can affect weight, that are within and outside of an individual’s control
  • Supports to identify changes to manage weight and health in the long term
  • Practice new skills to make and maintain changes that support overall health and wellbeing.
