HSE Healthy Ireland – Healthy Islands Initiative

A key learning from our experience with COVID-19 measures was that social isolation and loss of social links has a negative effect on the overall health and wellbeing of those impacted, particularly population groups who are hard to reach. It is important that our focus is not just on the medical needs of persons, but on their overall physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Islands, by their nature are remote and those living there may experience feelings of isolation and social disconnection.  HSE Heathy Ireland Health and Wellbeing is providing € 54,000 to 11 islands to support a suite of Healthy Islands initiative. The islands, which are off the coast of counties Donegal, Mayo, Galway and Cork, are receiving a share of this funding for initiatives they proposed based on the population of the island. Working in collaboration with Age Friendly Ireland, the island communities will implement various health-promoting projects and initiatives as part of the overall Healthy Ireland implementation.

On Friday 22nd March, the first event of the Healthy Islands initiative took place on Tory Island, which is located 15km north of Donegal. The initial focus on Tory Island was to get feedback from the local community on their health and wellbeing needs. This event was focused on engagement with the local community through an information day, with resources and supports on quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, healthy eating, mental health, physical activity and the new Age Friendly Ireland Healthy Home initiative which aims to support people to live in their own home with dignity and independence, for as long as possible Throughout the day healthy food and refreshments were served, with local musicians providing entertainment.

Sarah McCormack, HSE Healthy Ireland Lead, speaking to the islanders on the day said “We know it is important to focus on promoting health and wellbeing and reducing isolation. This has been a very successful day and demonstrated the importance of listening and understanding the challenges – and opportunities – that living on an island poses.” Sarah thank everyone who made the day possible and explained that “This Healthy Islands initiative supports cross government work. As part of the Government of Ireland’s Our Living Islands National Islands Policy 2023-2033, which aims to ensure Ireland’s offshore islands continue to support sustainable and vibrant communities, a key objective is to enhance health and wellbeing services.”
