Healthy Fingal, HSE Health and Wellbeing, Balbriggan Tidy Towns, and Balbriggan Basketball Club organised a beach clean-up on Saturday 27th July.
Taking advantage of the good weather a beach clean-up was organised to focus on removing cigarette butts and vapes from Balbriggan beach. The clean-up demonstrated great collaboration within the community with young people from Balbriggan Basketball Club learning about the dangers of smoking and vaping and understanding the environmental impact that cigarette butts and vapes have, before getting involved in the clean-up.
Cigarette butts account for nearly 50% of all discarded waste in Ireland, one cigarette butt can contaminate up to 1,000 litres of ocean water and contains toxic chemicals that harm wildlife and habitats. Cigarette butts should be placed in general waste bins and vapes can be recycled in WEE collections or at your local recycling centre.
Balbriggan Tidy Towns meet every Saturday on Balbriggan beach at 11 am to clean up and new volunteers are always welcome from everyone in our community. If you would like to become involved email [email protected] or call down any Saturday.
