A new, ground-breaking, Irish sexual health resource.
The 14th February 2022, saw the launch of a ground-breaking, new resource ‘Sexual Wellbeing & Intimate Relationships for Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer Women’. This resource was developed by the Sexual Health Centre Cork, LINC, and the HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme (HSE SHCPP).
The booklet addresses a range of topics in relation to Lesbian Bisexual and Queer (LBQ) women’s relationships and sexual activity and is the first of its kind in Ireland, breaching the historical invisibility of LBQ relationships and sexual lives. The content of the resource will also be of interest to the trans and non-binary people who don’t identify as LBQ women, but for whom the information is relevant.
The resource touches on a wide range of topics and signposts to further information on subjects such as: sexual consent, sexual pleasure, sexual activity, safer sex, and sex and aging. It also has information on healthy and unhealthy relationships, and includes reference to intimate partner violence within LGBT+ relationships; the existence and impact of which is often overlooked in societal discussion and consideration of domestic, sexual and gender based violence.
The new resource was developed through a partnership approach, which is central to the HSE SHCPP’s process across all its functions: research, clinical services, funding, education and training, and communications. Addressing the sexual health and wellbeing needs of diverse population groups is only possible through nurturing close, productive working relationships with representative groups, and with statutory and non-statutory organisations that serve these communities.
‘Sexual Wellbeing & Intimate Relationships for Lesbian, Bisexual and Queer Women’ is the latest in a range of initiatives that the HSE SHCPP has co-produced in support of LGBT+ relationship and sexual health.
