Arts and Health Awareness Day

To expand the benefits of arts and health across the HSE, areas with a limited arts and health programme were identified to host an Arts and Health Awareness Day. The first awareness day was held in Nenagh Hospital on 22nd January, which was organised and co-ordinated between the Nenagh Hospital team, Healthy Ireland UL Hospitals Group, Creative Ireland Tipperary Co. Council, and a local artist.

The artist designed a suite of activities for staff and visitors; some of which could be done in a minute or two (“leave your mark on this canvas”, “fill in the painting”); and other activities gave participants the opportunity to quickly learn a new skill (gel printmaking). A bookmark activity was included so that staff and visitors could do on-site or at home, providing materials and designs to create a personalised bookmark.

Participation on the day was very encouraging, with staff and visitors very positive about bringing arts into the hospital environment with open and enthusiastic conversations, and taking part in the different arts activities. An added benefit from the event was the opportunity it provided for staff from different departments to connect and get to know each other.  Staff from all areas of hospital including catering staff, consultants, ambulance team, and nursing joined in the activities.

All information and feedback received will be reviewed by the team involved to identify ideas and ways to progress and promote arts and health in Nenagh Hospital with a €1,000 bursary that has been provided by Creative Ireland for the benefit of staff and visitors.
