Understanding Migrant Mental Health

A new module Understanding Migrant Mental Health has been designed to help health service staff to develop a broader cultural awareness regarding the mental health and wellbeing of people from migrant communities in Ireland. It is relevant to all staff of the HSE and HSE funded agencies whose role may include supporting or interacting with people from migrant communities.

We all benefit from good mental health and wellbeing, but not everyone experiences mental health and wellbeing equally. This can be due to the impact of cultural, social, economic and situational differences. This module will increase your awareness of what shapes mental health and wellbeing and to understand the unique challenges that people from migrant communities experience in relation to their mental health and wellbeing. This module will help you provide a compassionate and empathetic, person-centred response when working with people from migrant communities and to signpost them to the available and relevant mental health and wellbeing supports if, and when it is appropriate.

This new module builds upon the first three modules of Intercultural Awareness Training (i) Inclusive Practices and Intercultural Awareness, (ii) Working with Others and (iii)  Refugees, protection applicants and trauma (iv) Understanding Migrant Mental Health. These modules have been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) for Continuing Education Units (CEUs): Module 1, 2 & 4 (1 CEU each) and Module 3 (3.5 CEUs).

The new module Understanding Migrant Mental Health was commissioned and developed through a partnership between the HSE’s National Social Inclusion Office and HSE Health and Wellbeing, https://healthservice.hse.ie/staff/training-and-development/intercultural-awareness-elearning-programme/
