Background
The pain of loss can often feel overwhelming and coping with this loss can be one of life’s biggest challenges. The Bereavement booklet “When someone close dies” was first published by the HSE in 2007 and was developed to provide an overview of the practical and emotional issues that bereaved people may face when someone close dies.
Content
The resource has undergone an extensive review and in line with previous versions, it is divided into three parts:
- Part 1: the many different responses to grief that people may experience and explores ways to cope
- Part 2: practical matters such as registering the death, post mortem examinations, managing financially, and dealing with legal issues.
- Part 3: organisations that provide bereavement support including information on helplines and bereavement self-help resources which are also available on the bereavement support section of the HSE website https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/services-support/bereavement/.
